Work in progress

"Most of my current work is in watercolour which has an immediacy and translucence fitting for landscape paintings. I work with a traditional technique of overlaid washes but push this to the limit to achieve the realistic effects I desire"

Above Hathersage

This is a large watercolour 30" x 22". I am using a sheet of Arches 300lbs not watercolour paper which is taped to a board after first wetting it. Although I normally work in situ this is a studio painting due to its size and is based on a number of photographs and jotted notes and sketches.

I start with a very detailed drawing. On top of this the initial washes are brushed in quite broadly. Additional washes are laid in, the painting becoming more and more detailed, I frequently finish sections of the painting before moving on although nothing is absolute and I often return to areas to add shadows or accents or to lift out colour or tones which appear too strong.
